Reflections on the Belgrade Workshop: Innovation, Tradition, and Hospitality

written by Raul Garcia Salcedo

This past May, I had the pleasure of participating as a speaker in the Workshop on Enhancing Research Impact and Innovation held at the School of Electrical Engineering, University of Belgrade, within the framework of the SUNRISE project. My presentation focused on several key topics related to the challenges and opportunities of knowledge and technology transfer in academic institutions, particularly emphasizing mechanisms for fostering collaboration between universities and industry.

What struck me most during the workshop was the evident commitment of the School of Electrical Engineering in Belgrade to promoting technological transfer. The discussions that followed my presentation revealed a vibrant interest among faculty and researchers in strengthening links with the private sector. Many of the attendees raised practical questions that highlighted steps already being taken at the school to foster such connections, ranging from the development of patents and support for spin-offs to strategic efforts aimed at creating sustainable bridges between research and industry.

The School itself is a remarkable institution, not only for the scientific excellence of its faculty and research groups, but also for the rich legacy it carries. The connection to Nikola Tesla, one of the greatest inventors and visionaries of modern science, is still palpable. His memory continues to inspire a new generation of young professors at the School, individuals who, with great passion and dedication, are shaping the engineers of tomorrow.

Beyond the professional aspects, my visit to Belgrade was deeply enriching on a personal level. I discovered a welcoming city, full of history and charm, with a thriving cultural scene and delicious cuisine. I also had the chance to forge new friendships that I will cherish for a long time.

I would like to express my special gratitude to Professors Goran Dobric and Mileta Zarkovic, as well as to Marija Šola, for their impeccable organization and warm hospitality. Their efforts made this workshop a truly memorable experience.
